Tip
Make a home inventory you can actually use
Make a room-by-room record of your belongings with photos, descriptions and any receipts you have. Keep a backup you can reach away from home. An inventory helps explain a loss; it does not override policy limits or prove every item is covered.
Start with one room
Open a document or use the NAIC home inventory tool. Choose one room you can finish today. Photograph the room, then record individual items with enough detail to distinguish them. A partial, organized record is a practical starting point.
Louisiana’s inventory checklist provides a room-by-room prompt. It is a useful organizing aid for US households, not a nationwide claim form or a coverage guarantee.
Make each entry understandable
Use consistent fields: room, item, make or model, approximate purchase date, price if known, and photo or receipt filename. Record serial numbers where useful. If you do not know a fact, mark it unknown rather than inventing an exact figure.
For example, “living room television” is a start; adding the make, model and a photo of the label makes the entry easier to identify later. Keep purchase evidence if available, without delaying the whole inventory while searching for one missing receipt.
Store it somewhere else too
Keep a secure backup outside the property or in an account you can access from another device. Avoid placing sensitive inventory records in a public share link. Include a reminder of where the policy and claims contact are stored.
Choose a repeatable update trigger, such as a major purchase or your annual policy review. Remove items you no longer own. Finally, compare categories of valuable items with the policy’s special limits and raise questions with the insurer. A detailed list is preparation, not an insurer’s acceptance of value or coverage.
